About Hotel

The hotel is situated in the centre of Zhitomir, right on the main square, so you will enjoy wonderful views from your balcony. Golden rooms include an air conditioner. Usually there are two rooms and a bathroom, however there is a special room which has two bathrooms, and this sometimes is very comfortable. Certainly there is a very nice restaurant on the ground floor, for your special order they can easily cook Caucasian meals which are very tasty.

People of Zhitomir are very friendly and full of humor. You might very rarely notice someone arguing in the street or transport. Most of the time people are smiling to each other and are being curious about everything. A person who doesn’t even know you can easily start a friendly conversation. And if they will find out that you are a foreigner, don’t doubt that they will try to speak to you, check their knowledge of language and find out everything interesting you can tell about your country and traditions. Zhitomir is very well known all over Ukraine for its hospitality and smiles. The town is very friendly in general, and probably this is the reason why crime level is so low in this town. Certainly if you go out alone in the late evening or at night no one assures that you won’t get lost or will not be bothered by someone, so just be careful as you would be in any city in the world:-)

And there is no shadow of doubt that if you take a cab and drive for about 15 minutes out of town you will get to the most beautiful place for a picnic you’ve ever been before!

History

The history of Zhitomir can be traced to as far as 2000 B. C. because its present location was the place of Iron Age settlements. The historians agree that Zhitomir was founded in A. D. 884. The legends have it that the city name comes from the name of a rebellious Prince's subject or from the practices of people living on this territory to produce bread and lead a peaceful way of life. Before World War II there were 62 enterprises, 29 medical institutions, a theatre, a philharmonic society, 3 movie theatres, 4 clubs and a museum in Zhitomir. But on the first day of war, on June, 22, 1941 Zhitomir was bombed by the fascist army and was almost erased to the ground. During the years of the World War II thousands of people from Zhitomir perished on the battlefields. Nowadays there are a lot of monuments in commemoration of the war victims in our city.

Culture

Zhitomir has a lot of historical and cultural monuments which mark the most significant events of the national and local history.

It was established in 1986 in the square between Rylsky and Kafedralnaya streets. The monument weighing a couple dozen tons bears the inscription: «Here, on the Zamkovaya Gora, Zhitomir was founded in 884¿.

It is the first monument in Zhitomir. Its opening took place on May 26, 1899 commemorating the centenary of the poet's birth.

The monument was opened in 1971 and bears the inscription: «Sergiy Pavlovich Korolyov - the outstanding scientist, creator of the first spaceships¿.

Thousands of people gave their lives away to liberate the city from the Germans. On May 9, 1979 on one of the highest city peaks the Eternal Glory monument was established.

Museums

The Zhitomir Local Lore Museum is the real depository of the cultural wealth of our region. The galleries include about a thousand of paintings of the 16th - the beginning of the 20th centuries, which were brought to Ukraine from the countries of Western Europe. The most valuable paintings of this collection are the works of Italian artists of the Renaissance (16th century) and Baroque (17th -18th).

Zhitomir is proud to be the place connected with the beginning of the space exploration era. Zhitomir is the birthplace of Sergey Korolyov, the designer of the first space satellites and the first spaceship "Vostok", in which the first astronaut Yuri Gagarin flew spaceward.

The Nature museum represents 12000 exhibits which tell the visitors about flora and fauna of Zhitomir region, about its climate, rivers and soils. One of the best collections of stuffed birds and animals in Ukraine is of great interest.

Architectural Monuments

The oldest building of the town are the former cells of the Jesuit monastery, which was built in 1724.

In the center of the city there is the Catholic Cathedral with the bell tower (1743-1746). The Cathedral is built in the late Renaissance and Baroque style. The front is divided in two tiers and crowned with towers. Two-meter thick walls are bricked up. The height of the bell tower is 26 meters (86 feet).

Another architectural monument is the Transfiguration Cathedral (1866-1874). The Cathedral was built in Russian- Byzantine style with the characteristic features of Old Russian architecture of 11th - 12th centuries. In the bell tower the main bell was places. Its weight is 8190 kilograms (about 18079 pounds).

Theatres

The first theatre in Zhitomir was built in 1809. But soon the wooden building of the theatre burnt down. The new building, built in 1858, remained till our days. It is the philharmonic society now. At that time it was one of the best theatres in Ukraine on the stage of which a lot of prominent Ukrainian actors appeared. In 1920 the "Independent Theatre" was opened, later its place was taken by the National Musical Drama Theatre. And now this theatre plays an important part in the cultural life of the city.

Parks

Zhitomir is buried in verdure. Its shady boulevards cross the whole city and stretch to thesteep banks of the Teterev. The central park of the city is situated in the picturesque surroundings. It strikes by the variety of its flora. Among more than a hundred kinds of trees and shrubbery there are a lot of valuable and rare kinds. The hydro-park is the favourite place of recreation and entertainment of our town-dwellers. The forest tract was preserved and changed into the landscape park by skilful hands. There are a lot of merry-go-rounds for children, several cafes, kiosks and a boating station in this park. It is an ancient, beautiful, green city with a rich history and hospitable people. The city is situated not far from the capital of our country, the city of Kiev (it is just 1,5 hours drive). The geographical position of the city is very favourable because you can easily and quickly get to any part of Ukraine from here.

Climate

Climate in Zhitomir is perfect for its geographical position. Even though it might be very cold in winter and very hot in summer, there is no other place in the world with such beautiful autumn and spring. Maybe that is the reason why most weddings occur here in autumn and spring!

In almost each street there is a banking machine where you can easily use your MasterCard, Visa, EuroCard and most of the available around the world nowadays cards. Transportation

Zhitomir is very close to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.
