Melitopol is a second-large city of regional significance in Zaporozhye region. It is situated on the river Molochnaya. Melitopol is one of the most important transport junctions of the south of Ukraine. It is located on the road crossing of international importance.


There’re some monuments of garden-park art such as “Gorkiy Park” of state significance as well as several parks of local importance in Melitopol. Not far from the city you can find a mysterious place and unique historical monument-reserve of the mezolite epoch – “Stony Grave” that is more ancient than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge.


History

The city was founded in 1784. The first mentions of it were in 1769 when here was founded a redoubt of Zaporozye Cossacks. In 1842 a city’s status was given to it and its name changed from Novoalexandrovka to Melitopol. The today’s name means “a honey town” in Greek.


To the end of the 19th century Melitopol developed as a commercial center; there were functioning some credit and bank organizations, storehouses of gross trade. The largest manufacturing companies were the iron foundry, the machine-building factory, the railway depot and many workshops.


Climate

The climate in Melitopol and its region is medium continental with hot dry summers, comparably cold and measurable snowy winters. The average annual temperature is +9.4C. The average temperature is from -3.6 to -4.5C in the winter and from +22.5 to +23.5C in the summer. The average amount of precipitation is 400-450 mm. The frost-free period lasts 180-185 days.


Economy

There’re many staple industries developed in Melitopol. Among them are machine building and metal-working, moulding, light industry, food industry. There’re also more than 2000 of middle and small companies registered in Melitopol. The city is also known as producer of cherry. The region has many fertile corny fields.


Transport

Melitopol is located on the crossing of auto roads that have international importance. It also has an important for traveling railway station. Melitopol is often called “the gate to the Crimea”. The way between Zaporozhye airport and Melitopol is 120 km. Trains or buses can be easily of use if you travel from any other city of Ukraine.
