History

The city leads its history since 17th century when the Cossacks came to the forest-steppe areas of present Ukraine with their families and created the first Slobody settlements. Kharkov was founded as a regiment-fortress town in 1654. Since then the city turned into one of the major industrial, commercial and cultural centers of Ukraine with population over 1.5 million people. From December 1919 to June 1934 Kharkov was the capital of Soviet Ukraine. Ukrainian cultural renaissance commenced here in the years 1920-1930. As one of the main industrial and scientific centers of Ukraine Kharkov is a home of many scientific discoveries that made revolutions in technology. Present architectural pattern of Kharkov has been developing for more than three centuries and has been influenced by various conditions of life, habits and traditions of Ukrainian people as well as of neighboring nations. The city has its own charm - narrow streets with old buildings of different architectural styles and small yards in the city downtown, huge and impressive main square, majestic cathedrals and small churches, metro (subway) many stations of which can be considered as a separate work of art. Kharkov has 6 outstanding professional theatres, circus, several museums and many libraries. Kharkov is a very green city, there are more than 100 parks on it's territory. Kharkov is the major student center of Ukraine. It is a city of 100,000 students and about 30 higher educational institutions. Among them are Kharkov State University, Medical University, University of Culture, National Law Academy and many others. Maybe because of the fact that streets of Kharkov are always full of young and smiling people Kharkovites are mostly peaceful and very hospitable people. Kharkov is considered the safest among large cities in Ukraine. Many foreigners come to Kharkov for business and pleasure.

That is why Kharkov is a city of 100,000 students; and all foreigners are surprised to see so many young people on its streets.

Climate

When traveling to Kharkov wear clothing that is appropriate for the season. Average temperatures in Kharkov (Celsius degree in day time): October +20...+5, November +10...-5, December +5...-10, January -5...-15, February -15...-5 March -5...+5, April +5...+15, May +15...+20, June +20...+25, July-August +25...+30, September +25...+20 (remember that temperature in night time is 5 degree lower) We recommend that you carry your personal items and medication along with a change of clothing in your carry on bag in case of lost or delayed luggage. Clothing should be of the easy wash, easy care variety. Be sure to take warm clothing. Sweats are great as they can be worn on cool days. A jacket with a hood is a good idea especially if traveling in the off-season. An umbrella, raincoat and good walking shoes is also suggested.

While in Kharkov you can use credit cards operated Visa, MasterCard and EuroCard. Please check with your bank before traveling to Kharkov if you can use your credit card outside your country. There are no problems with cash exchange in Kharkov. In addition, there are several ATMs in Kharkov. Also you can use services of Western Union. Transportation

To get to Kharkov you can take a flight from Kiev International Airport or by Train Station or Bus Station. Train Station, service centre. Food

DO NOT drink tap water. It is better to buy bottled water, such as "Ordana", "Berezovskaya", "Mirgorodskaya" even once boiled, as for coffee and tea, the tap water is fine. Throughout Ukraine alcohol is quite inexpensive and easily accessible. Ukraine is a Zero Tolerance country, so please do not drink and drive. The penalties are severe and you are never sure what may happen in such incidents involving the Police. It is advisable to purchase liquor in the better shops rather than small kiosks; this reduces the risk of weak, fake or dangerous products.
