History

According to the one of the legends Chernigov takes its name from to the “black forests” or “cherny forests” around the city.
Chernigov was first time mentioned in 907 in the agreement between Rus and Byzantine as the second biggest city of Kyivan Rus after Kyiv.

The Chernigov Principality of the 11th-12th centuries was one of the largest and most powerful states of the medieval Europe.

Museums

The biography of Chernigov and of the whole of Chernigov region is widely represented in the Historical Museum, one in the oldest and richest in Ukraine. The museum contains the archaeological collection, the numismatic collection, the collection of old printed books, the collection of Cossack Arms and equipment.

Side by side with the Historical Museum there is the Art Museum where 5 thousand pieces of painting, sculpture and decorative and applied art are presented. Art expositions are also displayed in the premises of Chernigov Collegium which is a part of the National Architectural – Historical Museum “Old Chernigov”.

Architectural Monuments

Chernigov is famous for its great number of historical memorials and architecture of the 11-12 centuries and 17-19 century. More than 200 of them are of world importance. The most valuable memorials of pre-Mongolian period are unique Spas`ka and Borysohlibs`ka Cathedrals, Antoniev Caves and Illins`ka Church Everybody who approaches Chernigov from the side of the Desna river along the highway is enchanted by the white walls and golden cupolas of the temple on the high hill. This is St. Catherine Church, the unique memorial of Cossack Glory. It was built in 1696 in honor of heroism of the Cossacks of Chernigov.

Theatres

Chernigov has rich theatre traditions. Nowadays 3 theatres offer their repertoires. The Chamber Choir named in honor of Dmitriy Bortnyansky is known not only in Chernigov, but all over Ukraine and abroad.
You can enjoy their performance in the Regional Philharmonic Centre.

Transportation

Chernigov is located 140 km away from the Borispol International Airport. It will take you near 2 hours to get to our city from there.

Money

There are a lot of ATM’s around the city which take all types of Credit cards- VISA, Master, Maestro etc. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to pay with your card in all the stores and cafes, but you can exchange your cash or Travel checks in bank departments or currency exchange offices.
