Berdichev is a small city in the South of Zhitomir region. Berdichev is famous bu its beauty and history not only in Ukraine but far from its borders too. The town is located on the green bank of the Gnilopyat river. There are a lot of suppositions about the origin of the name of Berdichev. The most famous is the one about the tribe, which inhabited this territory before the Middle Ages. The town was on the cross roads from Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, to the western lands. One more distinctive feature of this city is that it is famous for its beautiful and charming ladies!

History
The first archaeological finds were found in the local villages and belong to the end of the IV century B. C., though the at first the name of the city was mentioned in the XIV century.
In the XIX century Beridchev became very important trade center in the Eastern Europe. It was situated on the cross roads from Europe to Russia and from Russia to Crimea. A great role was played by the pilgrims, who came here to the Monastery of Barefoot Karmelits. There were a lot of fairs in the city and they are mentioned even in historical documents.
On the 2 of March 1850 famous French write Onore de Balsak married land-owning lady Evelina Ganska. On the 3 of December 1857 in the local village Terekhova, an English writer Joseph Conrad was born.
Culture
Berdichev has many monuments of historical and cultural value. There are some monuments to the heroes of Civil war and the monument of the Eternal Fire in the center of the city to those who gave their lives in the World War II.
There is a newly opened monument to those who perished in the war in Afghanistan
In the city there is a monument to the most famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, the city park is named after him too.
Museums
In the town there is only one museum of Berdichev Local Lore. Here one can find a lot of displays from the ancient times and the works of the modern artists too.
In the village of Terekhova there is a “house-museum” of the famous English writer Joseph Conrad who was born there in 1857.
Architectural Monuments
The oldest building of the town is the Monastery of the Barefoot Karmelits. This monastic order was founded in the XVI century and during its history it had different destinations. Now there is Greek-Catholic church and Music and Painting school on its territory.
Catholic church of St. Varvara was built in the first half of the XIX century. This church was famous for the high level and quality of education. It played a great cultural role in the city.
During Civil War and World War II a lot of buildings were destroyed and architecture of the city suffered a great deal.
Parks
Berdichev is a green town. Boulevard cross one of the main streets is a visit card of the city. Chestnut trees are beautiful in every season! In summer you can escape there from the sun, in autumn it is nice to walk on the golden carpet of rustling leaves, in winter the trees are bare and you can see tits and bullfinches on their twigs and in spring the whole city seem to be in blossom!
The city park or recreation named after Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, attracts a lot of visitor all over the year. There are a lot of interesting activities there for children and for adults either: marry-go-rounds, shooting gallery, carting and even disco at the summer time.
Climate
Due to the geographical position of Berdichev, the city has a perfect climate! Sometimes it can be very hot in summer and cold in winter but such periods doesn't last long. In spring the whole town is in bloom and the aroma of lime-trees in blossom won't leave you indifferent. Autumn brings rains and cover streets with gold...
